Public school / Private tuition / Both ? - It’s an age-old debate that’s been raging for years – and now it’s back in the news.

The argument is simple: is it better to send your child to a private school, or to have them attend a state school with extra private tuition to bolster their learning? A recent study conducted by the think-tank 'Social Market Foundation', claims that private education only actually improves a child’s earning potential as an adult by £3600 per year. Offset against the sometimes staggering amounts paid to attend public schools, and it’s easy to see why some people plump for private tuition instead.

The results of the SMF study

The study carried out by the Social Market Foundation worked like this: over a period of 16 years, they assessed the actual earnings of people between the ages of 26 and 42 – with an even split of both privately educated and state school attendees. The results revealed an earnings gap of around £200,000, with the privately educated people earning more. However, when these results were fine-tuned so that people were compared using their family background (for example, those who came from a wealthy family but still attended a state school and vice-versa), the results were much more striking. In this apples-for-apples comparison, the earnings gap dropped to just £3600. This suggests that earnings potential has less to do with how a person is educated and more to do with their upbringing, attitude to learning, and other external factors.

Private tuition or public school?

When it comes down to it, the results of this study seem conclusive: in real terms a public school education won't land you a much better paid job! It stands to reason then, that if parents do wish to bolster their children’s education, many will look at more cost-effective solutions when presented with this evidence. With the increase in private tuition firms and the recent rapid growth of the e-learning industry, many people now prefer to combine a state education with a private tutor – a path which is far less costly than a full-time private education – safe in the knowledge that their child’s prospects can be just as bright as any other.

A matter of preference

As with anything, at the end of the day all that matters is your personal opinion on the matter. It is by nature a very contentious issue, however it may offer reassurance to some to know that private fee-paying schools are not necessarily the ultimate answer to job success/satisfaction. As is often the case, using a combination of the tools at your disposal can be the most effective way forward. So to provide the best possible chance of success for your little learner, perhaps supplementing their state (or private) education with a few hours of private tuition is the answer.

Where do you stand on this debate? We’d love to hear your opinions and experiences as always, so please feel free to share below. You can also get in touch with the LCF Tutors team directly on 01489 786473.

That’s where the supply teacher service we offer can really be a lifesaver. Let’s find out more about why LCF is the perfect solution in sourcing quality supply teachers.

30 years in the making

Our parent company, LCF Clubs Ltd., has been in operation since the mid-1980s. That gives us an invaluable resource in terms of the pool of educational ability we have to select from. In that time, we have built up an extensive database of supply teachers within the UK, each of whom has a specialist area as well as being a solid all-rounder in the classroom. We understand that by its very nature, the need for supply teachers can mean a somewhat unpredictable brief in terms of the skills required. For this reason, we’re proud to be able to offer one of the most comprehensive choices of supply teachers in the UK.

There when you need it

When you find yourself in need of a supply teacher, it’s rare that you have a lot of time to play with. At LCF, we’ve seen requirements stretch from months in advance all the way down to a few hours! Because of our long history in providing supply teachers to educational establishments across the country, we’re totally confident that we’ll be able to find the right supply teacher for you in a time-frame that fits your needs. Likewise, if you don’t need a supply teacher immediately, but you’d like to plan ahead, you can register in a few clicks and have instant access to our whole database when you need it.

Here at LCF Tutors, we’re all about language and education as a whole. But that doesn’t mean we’re only experts in delivering top-notch private tuition – far from it. LCF was built on a foundation of language learning, which means we’re packed to the rafters with linguistic experts fluent in multiple languages – and we’re not going to keep that to ourselves. That’s why we offer a same-day translation service with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. After all, we like to think we’re the language experts, so who better to help you translate your materials? Read on to find out more.

Thirty years in the making

Here’s an interesting fact: we’re the only private tuition service in the UK that also offers translation services. It just makes sense to us: why build up all these years of expertise to only spend them in one place? With that in mind, offering translation services seems like a natural progression. We understand that sometimes things go wrong and people let you down, but our translation service is here to break the fall.

Professional translation services with rapid turnaround

One of the issues that we’ve noticed with other translation services is that they use non-native speakers. There’s no problem with that if they’re qualified, but there are huge benefits to a translator using their ‘mother tongue’. As such, lots of the translators we have on board at LCF Tutors are natural-born speakers of their target language. It’s just another way we make sure that the quality we offer is consistently high. Some of the tutors and translators that help with this service have been with the company almost as long as we’ve been around (and 1985 was quite some time ago).

Free registration for translators

Whether you’re in need of some super-fast translation or you’re a masterful linguist looking for a translator job, we can help. Plus, registering with and exploring our service is completely free to users and translators – so there’s nothing to lose. If you’re already an LCF Tutors customer, the process is even easier, just get in touch with us via the details below and you’ll be able to place your order for translation services in double-quick time. We like to think we offer full flexibility in terms of timescales, so whether you need it translated today or next month, we can help. Our prices are highly competitive and will always be well within budget.

The LCF Tutors same-day translation service is available right now. You can register as a translator using the links you’ll find on our website at
www.lcftutors.com. Or, if you’d like to talk us through your translation project in detail, just call our friendly team on 01359 233376.
Don’t run the risk of having your next translation project fall flat – get in touch today and we’ll make sure nothing is lost in translation!

Becoming a private tutor, whether online or in person, can be one of the most rewarding jobs around. After all, you’re actively helping people achieve their dreams and making a real difference in their lives. The things you teach them will hopefully stay with them forever. How many other careers can boast that? But like in many fields, it’s not always easy to find a [good] job these days. Tutor jobs can be tricky to come by, but if you've got five minutes, we recommend giving LCF Tutors a try. LCF is a snappy new online firm, offering an alternative to the traditional tuition agency. Tutor registration is free and they seem to have a network of learners who are looking for tutors just like you!

How to find tutor jobs with LCF Tutors

The first step is to register as an LCF Tutor – it takes about 2 minutes (trust me I've tried). Once registered, you’ll be able to log in to the system at any time and browse the learners who are looking for help. It really is that easy! Even better, there are no obligations for you to take on teaching jobs; you simply get in touch with the clients you choose, at your convenience, and LCF even alert you directly when new tuition work is available in your subject/location. The site gives you a general feeling of confidence that the tutor jobs you take on will be perfectly suited to your schedule and skill-set.

How is LCF Tutors Different?

The key to LCF Tutors, its USP if you like, (and the reason I believe it is one of the most user-friendly sites currently on the market), is that clients don't need to waste time registering. I certainly haven't come across another online firm that offers such ease of use for its customers. However, if this isn't quite enough to draw customers to the site, LCF have also done away with the traditional tutor profile. This means that instead of spending hours poring through lengthy tutor resumes, clients simply make what LCF calls an 'Instant Tuition Request' on the site homepage, and tutors contact them directly though the internal site messaging system. According to a recent article in the Guardian newspaper, LCF Tutors aims to be “the first provider to offer a genuine ‘click and go’ private tuition product”. A quick look round the site tells you they aren't messing around!

Tutor jobs to fit your schedule

One of the most attractive aspects of being a private tutor is the flexibility the role offers. You can choose the hours you’d like to work and a work load to suit you. Browsing for tutor jobs via LCF Tutors is no different. You’re able to pick jobs that suit your schedule and work-life balance. You also have the choice of online tuition or face-to-face teaching, which helps with scheduling even more.
For more info visit LCF Tutors on the web at www.lcftutors.com, or call 01359 233376.

If you’ve recently decided that you’re in need of some extra tuition to give you an added advantage as we enter exam season, you might well be feeling a bit daunted. After all, choosing your first tutors is an important decision, as it can affect your academic future. It can seem like a gargantuan task – especially when there are so many options to choose from. Well, if you fall into this bracket, there may be more help at hand than you think. LCF Tutors – one of the bright new firms in the private tuition market – offers a number of options which are perfect for learners searching for their first tutors. And to give you a boost, here are some useful pointers to help you on your way…

Experience

Because these are the first tutors you’ve actively sought, you may not be completely sure of exactly what to look out for, or how things work. For this reason, we’d always recommend that you plump for tutors with experience. With LCF Tutors, you’ll find countless examples of tutors who have already taken students to the heady heights of exam success. By selecting your first tutors based on their track record, you can feel confident that they will be leading you in the right direction with your learning, perhaps even suggesting lesson content and format based on what they have taught in the past.

Flexibility

One important thing to remember when picking your first tutors is that although you’ll need to co-ordinate your schedules somewhat, a private tutor will always attempt to work his/her timetable around you. If you work nights and they’re only available in the day, things might be a little tricky, but on the whole tutors are very flexible. For this reason, we always suggest that when looking for your first tutors you discuss tuition details (such as availability, content, price, etc.) before finalising tuition. Thanks to the unique (and very handy!) LCF Tutors site messaging system, clients are able to speak freely with tutors to ask as many questions as they need to, before committing to anything.

Affordability

Wanting the very best private tutors for your money is understandable. We highly recommend shopping around for the right tutor at the right price. In fact, that’s one of the reasons LCF Tutors doesn’t charge customers a penny for using the service. They believe that private tutors can be expensive enough, without the added worry of paying to find them! LCF clients can find the highest quality tutors at rates to suit their budget, without paying for the privilege! In fact use of the LCF Tutors website is completely free of charge to all users (clients and tutors) – something which really did catch my attention and make the site stand out from the crowd. With a huge selection of tutors to suit all levels and budgets, and an easy-to-use vetting process, LCF leaves the ultimate decision of which tutor to go for up to the client, with no middle-man interference. As for pricing, clients simply pay tutors directly. Tutors accept a range of payment methods and are certainly open to negotiating their fees(!) - which is refreshing to see and makes clients feel they are getting value for money.

Personality

'Clicking' with a tutor or teacher can help immensely on the road to academic success. Most of us remember a great teacher from school or college, who we just seemed to get along with. Conversely, it’s a fact of life that some people simply don’t, which is sometimes unavoidable in a classroom environment. However, this is the last thing you want happening with one of your first tutors! Again, this is where the unique LCF Tutors messaging system comes into its own. You can open a dialogue with any tutor that you feel would be suitable and really get to know them before going ahead. During this exchange, you’ll get a good sense of who they are and how they could help you. Remember: the better your working relationship, the better your retention and long-term learning will be – which is all the more important when selecting your first tutors, because your first experience of private tuition will likely influence your future learning choices.

Here’s a challenge for you: think back to the last time you were in a group lesson of any kind. Got the picture in your head? Great. Now ask yourself if that group experience was completely seamless, totally focussed and 100% productive? Hopefully the answer is yes, but all too often feedback on group learning experiences is negative. Classroom learning environments are often rife with interruptions, such as misbehaviour, late arrivals, and the customary “What did we cover last week” questions from the bloke who was away! Other set-backs such as last minute teacher changes, classroom swaps and varying levels of ability, all contribute to an often less than ideal learning scenario. But before we start screaming “Home tuition's the answer”, lets look at the ups and downs of private tuition as an alternative to group learning. Private tutors can often be used as an effective alternative or supplement to group scenarios, and can be a fantastic way to augment learning, (depending on variables such as individual student needs, quality of tutor, etc. etc.) Let’s look at a few of the key benefits of home tuition.

Source – www.ccl-cac.ca

Home tuition is a personalised experience

It’s a well-known fact that we all learn at different speeds. Some of us are able to absorb information much quicker than others, without the need to ask several questions. Therefore, the varying abilities that are present in most classrooms can hinder the rate of learning for some. Home tuition offers a far more personalised experience for the student, with the pace being set by him/her and undiminished by other individuals. This tailored work rate increases retention of information and optimises the learning process considerably.

Home tuition can be extra-curricular

The goal of passing exams is often the principal objective of any learning set-up, including the private tuition format. However the difference between classroom learning and home tuition, is that where classrooms are often only geared towards the specific skill of 'passing', valuable supporting information can be missed. This type of additional, specialised, 'less conventional' teaching, can help develop other skills such as critical thinking and creativity. One of the great benefits of home tuition, is that the tutor is able to go ‘off topic’ with a student if they feel it will benefit the wider goal of improved overall learning and exam success.

Flexible schedules to suit any learner

Logistically, home tuition is a fantastic choice for anyone who finds themselves strapped for time. For adults and children alike, having the flexibility to decide when learning should take place is a very appealing option. Tutors and learners often work together to coordinate a timetable which suits both parties, (although the more successful tutors will always be those who are most amenable to their clients' needs). Private tutors will dedicate enough time and schedule flexibility, to ensure that the learner is suitably equipped to succeed in whatever assessment they are heading towards.

Home tuition is virtually distraction-free

As we touched upon earlier, group learning can take place in environments which are far from ideal. With home tuition you are free to create your perfect learning environment – and therefore maximise your (or your child’s) chances of attaining those all-important goals. When starting tuition with a new student, a tutor will often take the time to ensure they are completely comfortable and ready to learn – based on the premise that the more relaxed a person is, the more they will take in. Feeling ready to learn can make all the difference!

A new piece this week as we enter exam season, about the benefits of exam related private tuition. If you're studying for an exam or tutoring someone who is, please share your comments with us below!

Ask anyone who is studying for an exam for the key to success and the majority will likely tell you the same thing: as with most things in life, there’s no one magic solution that works for everyone. Some people cram for exams at the last minute, others take their time to prepare months in advance. But if there is one strategy that almost everyone can agree on, it’s that personal tutors are an effective way to better your chances of achieving exam success. Whilst it’s certainly no silver bullet, personal tutors – such as those arranged at LCF Tutors – can be a hugely valuable tool when used correctly. Let’s take a look at exactly why this is.

Personal tutors can motivate, inspire and encourage

Whether you’re studying for your GCSEs, A-Levels or a citizenship test, there will likely be times when your motivation drops a little. At times like this, educational institutions are generally only able to provide a limited amount of 'extra' support due to the sheer weight of students they deal with. But personal tutors have no such limitations. In much the same way as the personal trainer you hired last summer managed to squeeze that extra 5 sit-ups out of you every session, many students who work with personal tutors report that their motivation is much higher, and that they feel supported throughout the learning process  due to the level of personal attention simply not available elsewhere.

 source: www.business2community.com

Personal tutors are not restricted by curriculum

Of course the main aim of almost all personal tutors is to prepare a student to pass the exam, and this generally means rigidly sticking to the curriculum. However, there are occasions when knowledge of information outside of the core curriculum can enable greater understanding of those tenets. Personal tutors will never shrug off a question which is outside of the core topic, because there is an understanding that this information can enable learning and assimilation of information in ways that may not have been possible in a classroom environment. Moreover, private tutors are aware that the a one-to-one session is solely geared towards the student, so really no questions are off limits. - Tutors please feel free to share some of your more shall we say 'off-topic' questions below. I've certainly had some odd ones in my time!

Superior coverage of topics

In a group learning situation, every member of the class will have a different speed at which they can digest and understand information. We've all experienced this at some point during our school days. Teachers can do their best to keep the pace suitable for everyone, but there will inevitably be questions that hold up the class (not to mention the classroom joker who likes to steal the TV remote and switch Jeremy Kyle on when the teacher's back is turned!). Because lessons are time-limited, learners who do not need to ask questions will lose out, as they have to wait for the lesson to continue. With personal tutors, the learning is set at the perfect pace for the individual student. Tutors can cover more topics in the same space of time at the perfect pace and level for the pupil. This clearly affords students of personal tutors the chance to study and learn at a more efficient rate with little chance of Jeremy Kyle interrupting! It’s a win-win situation for students of all levels.

Personal tutors: the bottom line

Making the decision to invest in the services of a personal tutor may not be the cheapest option available to parents and students. However, it can be one of the most rewarding and cost-effective learning choices a person can make. There are clear benefits to this level of personal academic care and it’s no surprise that more people are turning to personal tutors for help every day. If you’re looking for a new, effective way to learn at the perfect pace for you, please visit LCF Tutors on the web at www.lcftutors.com or call them on +44 (0)1489 786473. They specialise in connecting tutor and student directly and allow learners to negotiate the tuition fees directly with tutors, to avoid high fixed costs that can be worrying to many.
